Beyond the Darkness is a compilation of selected photographs and stories from Larry Louie’s documentary work over the course of 10 years.  The book is not filled with images and stories of horror and suffering, but of the strength and dignity of humanity living in severe conditions. The book explores haunting images of children playing basketball in a cemetery, children working in a balloon factory, images of Tibetan monks in the first prayer service after a 3 month closure of the temple by the Chinese government, images of the ancient historical monuments and the people who still live amongst them, and so many stories of courage and resilience of the common man.  It is about the lives he had touched, which in turn have touched him.  This book is a tribute to the friendships he has made all over the world through his work, and a celebration of the strength and hope found sometimes in the face of incredible hardships.
