Light in Broken Colours evolved under the darkness and quarantine of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to travel and under quarantine lockdown, Larry was able to go through an archives of images from the past thirty years. He found new meaning and new possibilities that he didn’t know were there before. He rediscovered new life in old forgotten images... this time in colour instead of his signature black and white. In these photographs, he wanted to reveal the subject’s true persona in their own environment in an unguarded genuine moment. He wanted to show the dignity of these people and their strengths and resilience to overcome life’s obstacles.

Beyond the Darkness is a compilation of Larry Louie’s documentary work over the course of the last 12 years. It comprises of selected photographs, photography insights, stories and poetry documenting the strength and dignity of humanity across the world. The book explores haunting images of children playing basketball in a cemetery, children working in a balloon factory, images of Tibetan monks in the first prayer service after a 3 month closure of the temple by the Chinese government, images of the ancient historical monuments and the people who still live amongst them, and so many stories of courage and resilience of the common man. It is about the lives Larry had touched, which in turn have touched him. This book is a tribute to the friendships he has made all over the world through his work, and a celebration of the strength and hope found sometimes in the face of incredible hardships.
