BROKEN SOLITUDE

I captured these twenty images between February and July of 1991. It is a study of the inhabitants of a dilapidated social complex in the inner city of Edmonton. These photos were my first transition from landscape photography to social documentation. Over six months I spent several Sundays visiting their residences, spending time with them to hear stories of their lives. Their stories were filled with bravery, struggles, and hardships. Sometimes our conversations were humorous. Other times they were sad. Thirty years later I feel privileged to have spent this time with them. I am honoured that they have allowed me into their lives to do this work. I am also distraught knowing the situation within our inner city has not changed much for those who live in poverty. They deserve so much more. This project has left a lasting impression in my life, and in my future projects.
