Larry Louie's book Beyond the Darkness was at the 2019 Lucie Book Awards ceremony on Monday Oct. 21 at Splashlight Studio in New York City as one of the books shortlisted for the award this year. Although the book did not win the award, it was still quite an honour to be shortlisted and be a part of the celebration in New York. It was exciting to see all the people that was taking their time going through the book and looked really interested in the work and stories there. The event was a great highlight of 10 years of photographic work and 2 years of putting this book together. We would like to thank all our friends that had help us with the book along with the amazing patience and workmanship of the staff and owner at Ion Print Solutions in Edmonton who printed this incredible book. Here is a bit about the book and it will be available for sale before Christmas !
Beyond the Darkness is a compilation of selected photographs and stories from Larry Louie’s documentary work over the course of 10 years. The book is not filled with images and stories of horror and suffering, but of the strength and dignity of humanity living in severe conditions. The book explores haunting images of children playing basketball in a cemetery, children working in a balloon factory, images of Tibetan monks in the first prayer service after a 3 month closure of the temple by the Chinese government, images of the ancient historical monuments and the people who still live amongst them, and so many stories of courage and resilience of the common man. It is about the lives he had touched, which in turn have touched him. This book is a tribute to the friendships he has made all over the world through his work, and a celebration of the strength and hope found sometimes in the face of incredible hardships.
Beyond the Darkness is a limited edition fine art photography book. Each book comes with a custom print signed by Larry Louie.
